The Dr. Romeyn Paine House, 1001 South El Molino Avenue
Running With History Mile 3 – The Dr. Romeyn Paine House, 1001 South El Molino Avenue: Built in 1910, this classically-styled home, with some Craftsman influences, was designed by the prominent Pasadena architectural firm of Myron Hunt & Elmer Grey. The pair designed the home in the last year of their partnership, and both professionals went on to design many high-profile commissions as individuals. The Paine House bears a strong resemblance to Myron Hunt’s own home at 200 North Grand, although there is a similarity to Elmer Grey’s residence as well, located down the road at 1372 South El Molino Avenue. Together Hunt & Grey were responsible for the design of the Mount Wilson Observatory, Throop Polytechnic Institute Pasadena Hall, and numerous residential commissions for wealthy clientele. A few of Myron Hunt’s notable projects include the Rose Bowl Stadium and the Pasadena Public Library. Elmer Grey is best known for his work on the Pasadena Community Playhouse and the Beverly Hills Hotel.
